Miele and Dyson are two of the most respected vacuum brands in the market. They are known for their rigorous product testing techniques that help develop long-lasting products. While both companies produce vacuums, their products exhibit notable differences and similarities. Here’s an in-depth analysis.
Brand History
Miele is one of the oldest vacuum manufacturing companies having been established in 1899. First, it ventured in the production of washing machines before embarking on manufacturing vacuum cleaners in the 1920s.
The company has gained tremendous experience over the years producing a vast range of vacuum cleaners and other home appliances like dryers, washing machines, dishwashers, and refrigerators.
Dyson, on the other hand, is a relatively new company having been established in 1991. It was the first company to introduce bagless vacuum cleaners, a concept that has transformed vacuum cleaning.
James Dyson, its founder, is said to have created 5127 prototypes of the vacuum machine before releasing the first bagless
vacuum cleaner
, the DC01. Today, Dyson is the leading vacuum manufacturing company with a market share of 25% compared to Miele’s 14%.
Apart from vacuum cleaners, Dyson also designs and manufactures air humidifiers, hand dryers, purifiers, bladeless fans, heaters, and lighting systems.
Technology
Both companies develop vacuum cleaners based on the concept of providing excellent filtration and expelling clean air. However, the implementation of the technology differs. Dyson uses cyclonic technology while Miele still uses the AirClean Sealed System with HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) and filter bags.
Vacuums using cyclonic technology release cleaner air than their counterparts. This is because the cyclonic suction pushes air in a vortex as it travels through the unit separating dirt from air. It explains why vacuums using cyclonic technology hardly lose suction and collect more dirt and dust than filters.
Conversely, the HEPA and filter bag construction use the filters to separate the dirt and dust from air before pushing it out. While vacuums using HEPA filters are recommended for users with respiratory problems and allergies, they barely clean the air in the house completely. Instead, they complement the main filter by trapping irritants and allergens into the unit.
Miele vs. Dyson Product Line
Both brands produce a vast range of vacuum cleaners including upright vacuums, canisters, sticks and robots. The primary difference is in the number of models in each product line. Miele, for example, has produced more than 20 canister models while Dyson has only three canister vacuums.
In addition Miele produces three types of canisters for each model: the C1 for entry level users, the C2, and C3 for advanced applications. On the other hand, Dyson produces two types for its canister product line: the standards and the compact version. When it comes to upright vacuums Dyson has seven models compared to Miele’s eight models. This means Miele caters to a larger audience concerning customer’s varying needs.
Construction
Cordless vs. Corded Design
Dyson takes the lead here as it focuses on producing lightweight vacuums. First, the company produces cordless vacuum exclusively in comparison with Miele’s corded vacuums. Cordless vacuums are a favorite in modern day households given the increasing need for quick and easy cleaning.
Most of Dyson’s cordless vacuums are the stick or handheld models and the company has revamped their designs over the years coming off extremely lightweight.
The V11 Outsize is an excellent example of a cordless stick vacuum. It weighs 7.85 pounds and provides a range of other benefits including a wide cleaning head and a powerful suction of up to 220AW. Conversely, Miele product line comprises corded vacuums apart from the Scout RX1 robotic vacuum.
For comparison, we’ll compare
Dyson Outsize V11
with
Miele’s Swing H1 stick vacuum
which weighs 9.7 pounds. This is way heavier than the V11. Also, it’s shorter than the V11 measuring 21.8 inches only. The V11 Outsize has a height of 50.6 inches allowing you to clean hard-to-reach areas quickly.
Bagged vs. Bagless Design
Notably most of Miele’s vacuums are bagged while Dyson’s are bagless. This means if you’re buying a
Miele vacuum
cleaner, you’d need to replace the bags and filters frequently. The additional cost of operation can be bummer for some people but safer for people with allergies.
Dyson’s bagless design eliminates the need to buy replacement bags, but it means the machine needs occasional cleaning too. Also, Dyson’s bagless design makes the devices lighter compared to Miele vacuum cleaners.
While Miele has also joined the bandwagon by producing bagless vacuums, Dyson still takes the lead. A head-to-head comparison of the
Miele Blizzard CX1 Electro bagless canister
and the
Dyson Ball Multifloor Canister
shows it’s easier to use the latter.
Dyson’s bagless canister automatically adjusts suction to the floor type making cleaning easier while the Miele CX1 Electro bagless canister needs manual adjustment.
Function and Accessories
Apart from cleaning carpets and floors, users want vacuum cleaners that can perform a range of other activities, e.g., removing pet hair, adjusting suction to respective floor surfaces, and cleaning upholstery.
Both Miele and
Dyson vacuum
cleaners have evolved to cater to these needs. Dyson equips its products with a vast range of accessories that enable users to clean all such surfaces. The
Dyson Ball Animal 2
, for example, has a self-adjusting cleaner head that adjusts the suction across wood, vinyl, carpet and tile floors.
Also, it has a tangle-free turbine tool that removes pet hair from upholstery and carpets without getting tangled. As if that’s not enough, it has an instant-release wand that makes it easy to clean under furniture and up high on the walls.
Miele Dynamic U1 Cat & Dog upright vacuum
makes a worthy competitor to this Dyson model. It also adjusts suction to the respective floor surface and its Active AirClean Filter has active charcoal layers that absorb pet odor. In addition to the regular accessories (upholstery tool, dusting brush, and crevice nozzle), it has a Mini Turbo Brush that removes pet hair from furniture.
Robotic Technology
Both companies just began integrating the technology into their spaces hence have a relatively limited selection of robotic vacuums. Miele has the Scout RX1 and RX2, while Dyson has produced the 360 Eye and the
360 Heurist
.
Notably, Dyson’s robotic vacuums perform better than Miele’s models but at a hefty price tag. It’s the first company to incorporate cyclonic suction technology in robotic vacuums but it’s relatively tall making it difficult to squeeze under furniture. Both
Dyson 360 Eye
and the Heurist, for example, are 4.7 inches tall.
If looking for more affordable robotic versions,
Miele’s Scout RX1
and RX2 make excellent alternatives. The RX1 is particularly handy as it supports scheduled cleaning and has up to four cleaning modes (corner, turbo, spot, and auto modes).
Also, it’s shorter than Dyson’s robotic models measuring 3.1 inches only; thus, cleaning under surfaces easily. Its successor,
Miele Scout RX2
, has an updated navigation that provides a digital layout of your home for easy room by room cleaning.
Noise
A comparison of Miele and Dyson vacuum decibel levels shows almost similar noise levels. However, Dyson vacuums are noisier than their counterparts due to their construction. Its upright models, for example, have large engines and the motor fitted higher from the ground level hence the loud noise.
Product Testing
Miele is known for its rigorous product testing practices before releasing a product to the market. Before releasing its Triflex vacuum, for example, it was tested for endurance by:
Replacing the battery 6000 times
Snapping the parking position 20,000 times
Loading the handle 120,000 times with more than 11 pounds of weight
Opening and removing the dustbin from the base mount 3000 times
Similarly, Dyson performs rigorous tests on its products. Apart from the company’s 120 engineers spending 50,000 hours designing the product:
The vacuum is dropped 5318 times to ensure durability
The vacuum is pushed back and forth to ensure it can last 21 years of use
Warranty
Both brands produce premium products built to last a long time and they prove this by providing the best warranties. Miele provides a 20-year warranty while Dyson vacuums have a 10-year warranty.
Wrap Up
This detailed comparison should help you choose a suitable vacuum between the two brands. While they exhibit notable differences, the bottom line is to purchase a machine that provides exceptional performance. However, if looking for a machine equipped with handy accessories and is more convenient to use Dyson takes the lead. Miele is a suitable buy if you want to compare different vacuum models, say the canister series.
