Robotic vacuum cleaners have become an invaluable household cleaning gadget over the last few years, and it’s easy to understand why. Their practicality, ease of use, and hands-free action take a load off cleaning surfaces compared to traditional vacuums.
When they first entered the market, they were perceived as a novel product designed for a few people. Over time, however, they have become a go-to cleaning device owing to the little time they take to clean surfaces, not to mention their ability to minimize in-home allergens.
Benefits of Robotic Vacuums
Efficiency
Modern robot vacuums are designed to perform multiple tasks. They clean, dump the dirt in the bin, and get back to the charging station. What’s more, they don't need supervision as they remember the layout of your living room.
Advanced models smoothly transition between carpeted areas and bare floors without manual configurations. Also, their natural back and forth motion ensures every part of the floor is clean. It is this feature that makes robotic cleaners extremely efficient in spot cleaning.
Cleans Different Surfaces
The robotic vacuum can clean multiple surfaces (carpets, wood floors, concrete, and linoleum) so you don’t need to purchase different gadgets. High-end models can transition between surfaces during the same cleaning cycle. Traditional models, however, require the settings reconfigured to match the respective surface.
Easy to Use
It’s the most obvious benefit of buying a robotic vacuum cleaner. Once you program the machine to clean a specific space at a predetermined start time, it can operate itself. You only need to place it on the floor at a designated start point, and it's good to go.
Moreover, most models have been refined to be self-regulating and almost foolproof, reducing the probability of experiencing mishaps. As such, you never have to worry about the machine getting stuck on a surface or getting faulty.
Saves on Time
The hustle and bustle of modern life leave little time to perform basic household chores. Having a device that can multitask on your behalf saves you time, and the best part is you don't need to operate the machine. Once you turn it on before leaving the house, it’ll do all the work as you run other errands.
Can Clean all Types of Dirt
Along with cleaning different surfaces, robotic vacuum cleaners are designed to clean all types of dirt. They are equipped with strong suction capabilities that remove even the most stubborn stains. Also, the built-in sensors enable the machines to detect the amount of cleaning required in different situations, a feat that remains unattainable in comparable cleaning devices.
Wi-Fi Connected iRobot Roomba 985 Review
The iRobot Vacuum Roomba 985 is one such robotic vacuum dubbed the smartest invention of all time. What stands out about this robotic vacuum is its intelligent mapping technology that enables the vacuum to map and track the location it is cleaning. And you can view its progress via the iRobot Home app.
Despite its powerful suction, it provides an impressive 120 minutes of cleaning. Once the battery gets depleted, the device returns to the docking station to recharge then resumes cleaning unfinished spots after a full charge. Here’s a detailed Roomba robot review of the 985 model.
How does iRobot vacuum 985 work?
While many vacuum companies tout mapping capabilities, the Roomba 985 seems to have aced the test. The developer uses a second-gen navigation system called iAdapt 2.0 that uses a camera to take low-resolution pics of the space and bring them together into a 3D layout to create a map.
The device then uses the map to clean the surfaces in parallel lines just as you would with an upright vacuum cleaner. The device is also equipped with an AeroForce filtration system that uses a powerful motor and HEPA quality filters to produce suction. The result is a thoroughly cleaned surface and a reduced number of allergens in a home.
When used along with its tangle-free extractors and stiff-bristled brush, the device cleans carpeted and hard floors more effectively and in less time.
Features of the iRobot vacuum 985
The following section outlines handy features that make the iRobot Vacuum 985 stand out:
Auto-Adjust Cleaning Head
The cleaning head is equipped with infrared sensors that identify the type of floor and fine-tuning extractors’ height. This process enables the device not to lose suction while keeping it close enough to sweep the hard flooring.
Self-Charging
You don’t need to monitor the machine’s battery status mid-cleaning; it does this on its own. Once the battery falls below 15%, it stops cleaning and returns to the charging station for a recharge. It then resumes cleaning where it left off.
AeroForce 3-Stage Cleaning System
This Roomba robot features an upgraded cleaning system called the AeroForce system. Unlike the previous one (AeroVac), it uses a powerful motor to create more suction and the improved extractors to sweep and collect debris, and a side brush to gather dirt from areas the robot can’t reach.
It’s a three-stage process consisting of sweeping, agitation and collection, and suction. The device first gathers debris along the baseboards, wall edges, corners, and thresholds using a side brush.
Next, it uses the dual extractors to collect and loosen debris in the carpet fibres. If using the device to clean hard floors, it uses the extractors to collect surface dirt and debris.
The final stage involves lifting the dirt from the extractors into the air chamber and pushing it into the collection bin.
Smart Mapping and VSLAM Technology
The latest iRobot models are equipped with vSLAM technology which facilitates more accurate cleaning. The technology uses a location and mapping algorithm that enables the camera to build a three-dimensional map. The application is uploaded to the mobile app allowing the end-user to keep an eye on the robot's location and battery status.
Advanced Dirt Detect
Dirt detection is one feature that makes Roomba vacuum cleaners stand out. This 985 model integrates an advanced infrared sensor algorithm that detects when a surface hasn’t been adequately cleaned. If the surface still has dirt, the robot turns around to re-clean the area.
Wi-Fi Connectivity
Wi-Fi connectivity has become a standard requirement for robotic vacuum equipment, and iRobot obliges with this 985 model. When using this model for the first time via the iRobot Home app, you need to set up a Wi-Fi connection.
This means once you download the application and sign up, you can connect it to the Home Base for Wi-Fi connectivity. What’s more, you can pair it with an Alexa device to issue commands like start, stop and charge.
You also access onboard indicators for Wi-Fi connection, battery status, and dirt detection keeping you abreast of the robot’s status.
The comparison between Roomba 985 and 980
While the Roomba 985 has many similarities as the 980 model, there are a few notable differences:
Accessories
Both models come with a line cord, an extra filter, and a home base charging system. However, the 980 features two dual-mode virtual wall barriers while the 985 has one. The feature prevents the device from entering rooms or cleaning close to things like pet food bowls. This means, if you have more than one place you want the Roomba to avoid, the 980 model is a better buy.
Side Brush
The developer includes a side brush to help the vacuum cleaner to collect dirt more efficiently. It gets rid of dirt gathering in the corners and the edges of the wall too. While both models are equipped with a side brush, the 980 model has an extra brush.
irobot home app, how does it work?
You can control your Roomba 985 from your phone by downloading the iRobot Home App. The app is compatible with iOS and Android mobile devices, allowing you to:
Start and stop cleanings
Create cleaning schedules
Send the robot to the charging dock
Set filter change reminders
Monitor robot care status
Review automatic software updates
Turn notifications on to receive real-time alerts
Zoom into, and view map reports to see areas the robot is cleaning
View battery level
The iRobot Roomba 985 is a good buy if looking for a smart cleaning device that eases your cleaning chores. Not only is it equipped with a camera-based navigation system but a more extensive collection bin that minimizes the number of times it needs emptying. Apart from using the app to control it, you can issue voice commands through Alexa.
